My New Bedmate
It has been years since I have had a full-time, indoor cat. David (second husband) and I had two cats when we were first married. Then we went to dogs, so having this kitten in the house has been an adjustment. Even with the cats we had, they were closed off from our bedroom at night. This is the first time I have ever had a cat sleeping with me and I’m still not sure if this is going to work out. (Forrest doesn’t really count because he never stayed more than 10 minutes). I have a hard enough time sleeping and now I have this little creature who appears to be OBSESSED with me. She is a biting, scratching, psycho kitten when she is alert and playful, but come bedtime, she turns into this sweet, loveable, cuddly bundle who won’t leave me alone.
Last night I was in bed by 10pm and doing my best to fall asleep with a low rumbling of fur draped across my throat. The purring tends to lull me so I must be getting used to that, but her constant need to touch me is not so easy to live with. After fitfully sleeping and trying not to disturb Maeby, who was now across my chest, I looked at the clock about 2:30am. With the light of my phone, I saw her watching me, and then in my slight delirium I began to hear her speak to me:
Oh good, you’re awake. Purr….
I’m just going to rub my nose back and forth all over your face.
There’s your hand. Let me lift it on my head. Yes, scratch my ears, that’s good. Purr…
I’m going to rub my nose all over your face again and sniff your eyelids too.
Why are you pushing me away?
You’re pushing the covers off. Are you hot? Is that steam?
What’s this? Oh, sorry, I didn’t mean to hurt you. Maybe you should put a shirt on.
Let me lay right here on your chest.
I want to touch your face.
Come on, my claws aren’t out.
Wait, I’m not comfortable, let me turn around.
Sorry, I know my butt is in your face. I’ll turn around again.
And again, and again.
Let me try your pillow.
I think I want to lay on your shoulder, but let me rub my nose on your face again. Purr…
Wait, why are you turning away from me?
It’s okay, I’ll climb over you.
I’m not leaving.
Just let me turn around and get comfortable. Purr…
Okay, I will lay on the bed in this little nook your created with your arm.
Stop what? Can’t you see I’m bathing.
Why are you turning away again?
Is this your ear? Purr…
You are moving the blanket. Do you want to play?
Oh, now you’re cold. Make up your mind.
Yes, good. Lay on your back.
I’m just going to rub my nose all over your face again. Purr…
